October 2010 show: CANDYLAND by Kelly Lyles

SHOW: Kelly Lyles presents CANDYLAND

WHERE: Twilight Artist Collective

WHY: You need more CANDY!

WHEN: Opening Party during West Seattle Art Walk Thursday, October 14th, from 6 to 9PM. Show comes down 11/7.

About the Show:

West Seattle Artist Kelly Lyles has turned our back gallery into her own CANDYLAND. This show will include 50 small candy "portraits" in addition to a floor piece that will take you onto the board game we all remember from our childhood.

Artist Statement:

Life is fun - I'd like viewers to share that.

With assistance from a 4Culture grant, I've completed a new series, an interactive themed show called CANDYLAND. CANDYLAND, a popular board game for children originally created over 70 years ago (and continually revised, reiterating the timelessness of the theme).

Candy is universal and International, every country has a favorite packaged sweet and a love of sugary treats. In this political and economic climate, I think play and humor are much needed antidotes, so this grouping exemplifies our simple commonality. Candy is colorful and visual; nostalgically evoking childhood memories (whether rewards, even bribery, or conversely the "forbidden") in a lot of adults, encouraging playfulness and happiness. This is also a personal theme for me - I always keep candy only in my studio as a lure to begin work!

February 2010 show: Bad Words, curated by Chris Crites

Come check out the February Art Walk opening tomorrow from 6-9 pm! This month's show is curated by Chris Crites and is all about bad words! According to Chris,

"It is the human imagination that generates a context in which certain words are frowned upon in common usage. These words vary from region to region, but every language seems to have some. There is really nothing wrong with a word. It can't harm anyone literally, but again, the human mind can take words very seriously at times and can create its own damage from them. Despite all that, they can come in handy and express things good words just can't."

Featuring work by: Nat Damm, Kevin McCarthy, Kelly Lyles, Kamala Dolphin Kingsley, Troy Gua, Molly Norris, Kristen Ramirez, Sara Lanzillotta, Lisa Geertsen, Shaun Kardinal, Warren Dykeman, Mary Enslow, Michael Alm, Aubrey Nehring, Gail Howard, Erin Frost, Andrew Drawbaugh, Sharon Arnold, Sierra Stinson

*WARNING: This show contains language that could be considered offensive and is intended for mature audiences.

"STOP! COLLABORATE!"

OPENING: Thursday August 13th, 6 - 9 PM during the West Seattle Art Walk!

Featuring: Eric Osborne, Matt Calcavecchia, Nate Stottrup, Marty Gordon, Stefan Caswell, Mara Rivet, Justin Hillgrove, Jessalin Beutler, Mark Gunderson, David Enriquez, Brad, Strain, Clare Bowers, John Osgood, Debbie Bianchi, Stephanie Doll and Todd Karam.

The first annual "Stop! Collaborate!" show, curated by local artist Todd Karam. This is one-of-a-kind opportunity where 16 artists from Washington and California collaborated with each other. Of course there's a twist. Each participating artist contributed one of their own "completed" pieces. After drawing names from a hat, another artist from the group then took the once completed piece to expand on it. You ask "..but, but will they respect the work of the other artist? Is this normal?" The answer is, "who knows." Slide, roll, dance, jiggy, jump, run, skip, breakdance, moonwalk your way to Twilight in West Seattle. Whatever you do, don't miss this one-of-a-kind show!

Erik Chillman and dj Joel Dipietro will be spinning during the opening so bring your dancing shoes and props, if you plan on becoming more than a spectator. Dance music, and old hiphop/funk party stuff! Spectators welcome, the spectacle needs it's muse!

STOP COLLABORATE! call for artists

SHOW: "STOP! COLLABORATE!" - Curated by local artist, Todd Karam.

WHERE: TWILIGHT ARTIST COLLECTIVE / WEST SEATTLE JUNCTION

WHEN: AUGUST 2009! Opening Reception: Thursday August 13th, 6 - 9 PM during the West Seattle Art Walk.

WHAT: Yo VIP let's kick it. Stop what you're doing or what you're creating. I'm looking for a unique group of artists to participate in my first annual "Stop! Collaborate!" show. This is one-of-a-kind opportunity to collaborate with other members of the community. Of course there's a twist. Each participating artist will contribute one of their own pieces. After drawing names from a hat, another artist from the group will then take your piece and expand on it. Creative control is out of your hands and the torch has been passed on. You ask "..but, but will they respect the work I've done?" The answer is, "who knows". Maybe you have an old painting you wanted to bring new life to. Maybe you have a new piece you want completed by another set of hands. You're the artist! Just make sure the the piece you bring to the table is in fact your piece.

SALES: All sales will be split evenly between the two artists and the gallery will get their cut. Prices for each piece will be determined by the two artists and agreed on by the gallery. I want to keep the price of each piece under $250 (recession-friendly), so please consider small or medium sized pieces.

DETAILS: Artists will be required to attend one meeting at Twilight (TBD). Names will be drawn and artwork will be exchanged. Work will be due to Twilight by Saturday AUGUST 8th.

SUBMISSIONS: Please submit 1-3 images of the piece(s) you'd like to consider exchanging, to me via email:
