"ArtsWest is now accepting submissions from Pacific Northwest visual artists who wish to be considered for inclusion in 1 of 12 exhibitions. Two to three artists will be featured in monthly exhibits beginning September 2011 through August 2012. All submissions must be received by March 11, 2011."

Art Attack with Staci Graveley!

Join us for a one night only, Twilight curated solo show at Stables on February 12th! Staci Graveley is putting on a solo show of paintings.

The 12th also happens to be Seattle's 17th annual celebration of Neighbor Appreciation Day and, in the neighborly spirit, Georgetown Brewery is hooking us up with some donated brew. Stop by between 6 and 9 PM for some snacks, drinks, and artwork during this month's Georgetown Art Attack! RSVP on facebook.

"As Gustav Klimt once said "Whoever wants to know something about me, must observe my paintings carefully and try to see in them what I am". I feel the same way. I have been told that my pieces are really moody or that it is hard to believe that one person did all of them. Most of what I do, I do because that is how I'm feeling at the time. Creating art is many things to me but mainly it is the best way I know how to express myself. I grew up in rural Montana and moved to the Seattle area in early 2002. Even with them being almost opposites, I feel that both have influenced my work. I work mainly with cattle markers, oil pastels and acrylics."

Hey there, I'm one of Twilight's new interns! My name is Sara and I'm from Lancaster PA. I'm working at Twilight for two months, and this is my first time in Seattle. So far it's been great.

One of the projects the girls at Twilight have me and their other intern Ellen working on is re-doing their window display. We're going to design a couple of displays for the upcoming months and then build as much of them as we can in advance so that they can easily be installed when it's time. For valentines day we're making a bunch of wax paper hearts to catch the afternoon sun and accompanying them with a suitcase full of handmade paper roses. Ellen and I did a couple of days of research looking for the best tutorials on paper rose making, and let me tell you, it was slim pickings. There's lots of beautiful pictures, but as far as instructions go, one seems to have a choice between paying for good tutorials or struggling through mediocre ones.

We eventually chose the latter and, as a bonus, have decided to share our new knowledge in our very own tutorials. Here is my interpretation of the paper rose; look at Ellen's version also.

Materials:

For paper roses, you will need paper, glue, tape and scissors. You can use pretty much any kind of paper; some types hold the shape of the rose for longer or are easier to work with. For this, I used an old Sears catalog.

Step one:

Cut out a few half circle pieces of paper. They should be of varying sizes/lengths, because you need to make a couple different pieces that will fit together:

As you can see, what you want to do next is roll these strips up to make the center of the rose. Wider strips will make longer rolls, tighter curves will make wider flares, and of course longer strips will make more layers. Roll the paper strips around their inside edges so that the outside edge flares out:

You should make about 3-4. Tape the end of the strip so that the roll doesn't come undone.

Make sure that the smaller rolls fit inside of the larger ones; you'll glue them together in the last step:

Step Two:
Next cut out a heart shape:

As you can see, the base of the heart has a slit cut in it to make two tabs. Take one of the tabs and use it to begin rolling this piece into a cone shape:

Roll the first one quite tightly and secure it by putting a piece of tape on the second tab and winding it around the base of the cone:

Next, turn down the ends of the heart to make them look more like petals:

The largest of the rolls you made in step one should fit snugly inside of this cone:

Cut out a bunch of hearts to make the rest of the petals. They should increase in sixe as you go, but only very gradually:

Wind each heart into a petal piece one at a time:

When you are done with each heart piece, attach it either with glue or tape to the one's you've already made.

They should stack like Russian Dolls. I usually find it easier to glue the smaller petals and tape the larger ones.

Step Three:
Eventually, when the rose is looking nice and round and full, you'll want to finish it up by attaching the rolls from step one. Fill the middle petal piece with glue:

Insert the largest roll so that it sits snugly inside of the flower:

Add more glue to the center and insert the next smallest roll:

Keep repeating this until you have glued in all of the rolls:

Now just let the flower sit until the glue dries and you're done!

We've experimented with extras like glitter spray and watercolor to make the roses look more interesting.

HOW THE TWAC DID WE GET HERE?

Coming up on our 6th year anniversary, I thought it appropriate to write about how Twilight Artist Collective all came to be.

Erin, Cheryl and myself (hi, it's me, Mary!) were all independently headed to this place for years before we even met. Cheryl had studied ceramics in Arizona and had been living in Seattle, expanding the funk of her wardrobe and learning about bizness via her years of work at Carmelita and her personal business venture as a commissioned chalkboard artist for a number of years.

Erin, after growing up with art all around her, continued her lifelong pursuit and studied visual arts at the University of Washington. Erin's grandfather was an amazing painter and her mentor, Kal, taught Erin how to express herself artistically from a young age.

I had always dabbled in art myself, but it wasn't until I was in college that I actually started thinking that I need to pursue art seriously. Simply because I had an overwhelming desire to express myself and make. Falling into the sculpture program, however, was circumstantial. I fancied myself a self taught painter, but when I couldn't get into a painting class I took a class from Norm Taylor who was then head of the UW sculpture program. I realized that I needed to most certainly spend $30,000+ learning how to make molds, melt metal and turn my ideas into 3-d.

In 2003, Erin and I both applied to the UW studio art program in Rome. Previously, Erin and I did not know each other, but it wouldn't take long for us to be bonded in our new ancient home. In our program we traveled North and South throughout Italy. We saw abandoned cities, breathtaking structures, the new built atop the old. Our minds and hearts were expanded. Our job was to make art!

Upon our return in December we continued to meet for our daily cappuccinos and reminisce about the world we had left. I began a little business producing goods from my then studio in the Fenpro building in Ballard. I was essentially making purses all day and then selling them at the various markets. That summer, I took on a gig working for the Special Projects team for One Reel. Cheryl had worked for One Reel in the past and came on the crew as a veteran member of the Bumbershoot SP production team. I had noticed Cheryl but we didn't actually meet until the week of the festival when we both got in the elevator together. I made a ridiculous comment and with Cheryl's response I knew we were from similar planets. We proceeded to spend the next few weeks joined at the hip. Daily, after we clocked out, we would hit the local bars and talk and talk and talk about this place that we needed. We spoke about the harsh reality artists face after school ends and you find yourself trying to make the same caliber of art in your basement, with limited tools, all ALONE.

meanwhile...

Erin was still getting coffee with me and wondering who this new friend of mine was. I think it would be accurate to say that Erin was even a bit jealous of my new friendship.

and then...

a gentleman named Mischa who Erin and I had actually met in Rome (he was our professors husband) approached me with some very interesting news. Mischa had been selling my purses in his Pike Place Market shop for about a year and he had decided he wanted to sell his business and focus on a film project. I listened with interest and bit my tongue. Five minutes later I called Mischa back to tell him that I would like to buy his business with some other artists and that as soon as I figured out who these folks were, he'd be the first to know.

AND THEN....

12 people became 3. I approached several people about buying the business and running it as a collective together. During this process Cheryl and Erin met for the first time, we talked, we talked, we talked. The other interested parties opted out. Three weeks later, in January of 2005, Erin, Cheryl and myself, signed various documents and checks and BAM!, just like that, we were business owners.

THEN WHAT?

Well this is where TwAC began. We realized that the business we purchased was not what we needed it to be and so we threw it all out. We changed our name to Twilight Artist Collective, we asked for a new website, we painted the walls and we played new tunes. In these early days we were ELATED when we sold $60 worth of goods in a day. We didn't know what we were doing, but we were doing it because we knew it was right.

And well, that's how it's continued to play out. I think it's safe to say that we now know what were doing and I think we do a pretty good job, but really we don't feel like the choice is ours. We need more places filled with things that are made with thought and care. We need more places that help support the folks that choose to create, inspire and communicate ideas visual.

SO in answer to the question, HOW THE TWAC DID WE GET HERE?, the answer is faith, desire, trust, alcohol, community, and perhaps good luck.

Last month, I was lucky enough to be contacted by the hilarious and talented Linus Von Moos of Switzerland, via couchsurfing.org, where I have been a participating member for a few years now. Couchsurfing is awesome! It is a network for travelers enabling them connect and share resources. Specifically, a place to sleep.

Linus is a visual artist and during the week he has been staying at my house in the CD, he has completed 3 paintings and learned to play the clarinet. This go-getter volunteered to paint this mural on our storefront over the past few days! He wanted to give back and also thought it might help his international celebrity status. About the Show:

West Seattle Artist Kelly Lyles has turned our back gallery into her own CANDYLAND. This show will include 50 small candy "portraits" in addition to a floor piece that will take you onto the board game we all remember from our childhood.

Artist Statement:

Life is fun - I'd like viewers to share that.

With assistance from a 4Culture grant, I've completed a new series, an interactive themed show called CANDYLAND. CANDYLAND, a popular board game for children originally created over 70 years ago (and continually revised, reiterating the timelessness of the theme).

Candy is universal and International, every country has a favorite packaged sweet and a love of sugary treats. In this political and economic climate, I think play and humor are much needed antidotes, so this grouping exemplifies our simple commonality. Candy is colorful and visual; nostalgically evoking childhood memories (whether rewards, even bribery, or conversely the "forbidden") in a lot of adults, encouraging playfulness and happiness. This is also a personal theme for me - I always keep candy only in my studio as a lure to begin work!

within it. Cash’s paintings reflect the textures of the city as well as the
colors and spontaneity found in nature. For this show, John & Cash, will

ABOUT THE SHOW:

Come glimpse the Forest King's realm and the creatures and oddities under his stewardship. New works by Justin Hillgrove, Eva Funderburgh and Mike Capp.

Justin Hillgrove (http://www.impsandmonsters.com) grew up in Snohomish, WA and has been enjoying artistic expression since he was old enough to color on the walls. He studied Design and Illustration at Seattle Central and has since enjoyed many years of freelance illustration and design, working on everything from collectible card games to toys. He paints monsters, imps, robots and other oddities in satirical, sweet or uncomfortable situations he finds amusing, many of which are inspired by his children. Justin has showed at galleries and shows all over the country, with collectors all over the world.

Eva Funderburgh (http://evafunderburgh.com) is a Seattle artist, who makes strange and slightly whimsical ceramics monsters. While technically a native Seattleite, she has spent most of her life so far in Kansas and Pennsylvania, but is glad to now be back in the land of rain and delicious salmon. A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, she's been working on art full time for the past few years, and has created a world of fat, elegant, and clumsy beasts. Her sculptures are finished in a wood fired kiln, an anachronistic process more connected with the Japanese tea ceremony that with the present art world. The end results are beasts that share influences from comic books to Greek myth to Japanese anime, but yet are truly unique.

Mike Capp (http://www.yessy.com/mikecappart)is an accomplished artist who finds inspiration for his artwork through his children's creativity and pop imagery. His paintings don't really mean anything dangerous, angsty or irksome. There's no bubbling social commentary. His paintings which incorporate his young children’s' drawings aren't meant to provoke the unarticulated terrors of childhood. They're just drawings of monsters, superheroes and robots. Even though there's plenty of angst behind his humor, more so there's a playful, impish, boy's mind, full of cartoons and KISS memorabilia. His technique is solid and clean, so he affords himself the privilege of choosing subject material that is loose and silly, while still keeping a close eye on small details of color and composition. He paints what feels good and what results are paintings that are funny and frivolous, in a good way. It's not as important to understand what his paintings mean, as it is to understand that they are just what they appear to be.

S3A Presents W3AVE: A Two Night Collaborative Art Event

WHAT

S3A presents a two night/two neighborhood event called “W3AVE”, bringing together 18 Seattle urban artists for a live collaborative art session the first night, followed by an opening reception and auction the next night.

The live painting event on the first night will take place at the Henry Art Gallery for their “Open Floor” program on Thursday, April 29th from 7-9pm. The reception and auction for the finished collaborative pieces will take place on Friday, April 30th from 6-9pm at City Hostel Seattle in Belltown. Both events are free and open to the public.

The artist line-up includes: Ego, Stacey Rozich, Augie Pagan, Weirdo, Solace, John Osgood, Kevin “Sensei23” Sullivan, Zach Bohnenkamp, CASH, Ninjagrl, 179, Joe Vollan, Mat Savage, PaperMarbleS, Jeremy Gregory, Justin Hillgrove, Mike Capp & Mike Gardner. The artists have been divided into six teams of three. Each artist will show up to the live event with a 12”x16” canvas that they have already started to work on. During the live event, they will swap their canvas with each of their team members and contribute to their canvases while the audience watches. By the end of the live event, each team will have three completed collaborative pieces to be auctioned off the following evening.

In addition, both events will include: DJ EMC and the Acid Unicorn dropping contemporary beats, cooking up an engaging blend of dance grooves and known and loved favorites - from yesterday, today and tomorrow.

WHY

S3A has partnered with Henry Art Gallery’s “Open Floor” program to bring more awareness to an under-represented genre of art and artists in the Seattle area. The Open Floor program is a monthly laboratory of ideas coordinated by the Henry Art Gallery staff. Each month Henry Staff, local artists, musicians, performers, and filmmakers present work with the hope of generating new creative relationships.

DEAR FRIENDS OF TwAC,

We wanted to fill you all in on some late breaking, bittersweet, Twilight news. The 31ST of AUGUST is going to be the last day of Twilight's Pike Place Market store. We've given it everything we've got, and more, and it's just not rebounding from the recession fast enough to make it viable for us to stay open.

The effects of this economic slow down has hit Pike Place Market all over, and we're one of many businesses making a move. Thankfully we have our West Seattle Junction location to focus on! The Junction shop has weathered this storm extremely well, and we're very proud and lucky to have a supportive and dynamic community over there that supports Fresh Local Art.

The three of us are definitely melancholy over leaving Pike Place - it is after all where we got our start - but getting through these trying and uncertain financial times requires decisions made from a strong business sense and not emotional places. We are also working hard to make sure that anyone looking for Twilight post August 31st knows exactly where to find us. Please help spread the word.

We are looking for some good people to help us with some or all of the following:
~Working in one of our two galleries on Tuesdays and/or Sundays.
~Attending and assisting with our second Thursday openings, which take place during the second Thursday of each month from 6-9PM in West Seattle.
~Participate in quarterly brain hurricanes where we get together with like-minded galleries (bherd, suite100, La Familia) to strategize.
~We would also be willing to give web management, marketing, funding and outreach experience to interested candidates.

An ideal Twilight intern has; a true passion for the funky, urban eclectic art scene here in Seattle, is self-motivated, articulate, charismatic and most importantly, fun. This is not a paid internship.

Dear TWILIGHT ARTISTS,

As we're sure you have witnessed, the current economic climate has eaten many small businesses alive. To avoid becoming one of the statistics, we realize that we're going to need to change things up in order to stick around. Over the last several months we have recommitted ourselves to the drawing board, determined to figure out how to make Twilight Artist Collective the smooth-sailing Mother Ship she so deserves to be. After 4.5 years in business, we are SO proud of our collective family of artists, and all that Twilight has become. However, amidst today's economic state, we have realized the pressing need to think about this community differently. We are going to be making some changes that will be beneficial to EVERYONE involved with Twilight. It's always at a time when change is most vital that you can see things with an unexpected clarity, and a new chapter begins.

That said, we have been working with an expert in business, specific to the gallery world, for the past several months and HALLELUJAH we are ready to rock!

THE NEW CHAPTER: During the month of June we will be implementing a new business structure that will be based on a financial commitment from our members. This commitment can be made on a variety of levels - depending on the level you choose, you will take home 55% to 75% of your Twilight sales! Why does this work? It is beautifully simple. Our membership fees will allow us to build a budget that is reliable and will provide Twilight the stability to thrive. This stability will free us up to better serve you and our gallery patrons - ultimately generating more sales and a higher earning potential across the board.

CURRENT PROJECTS & PROMISES: Along with our current presence in two different neighborhoods in Seattle, and the list of venues we curate, we are implementing some new ideas to get your art to the people. We are launching an online networking system (think Facebook for Twilight artists only) that will allow for better communication and more streamlined collaboration between members, and an "inside look" for our customers. We are also rebuilding and re-launching our website to better feature you and your craft, as well as making it more user friendly. We will be implementing a shopping option, so we're sure not to alienate the folks who prefer to browse and buy directly from their desktop.

We are SO grateful to have been working with you thus far, and would be honored to have you take this next step with us. We are 100% committed to representing you as a member of Twilight Artist Collective to the very best of our ability, and hope you will welcome this change and all it's benefits, with paint-splattered open arms.

This is one-of-a-kind opportunity to collaborate with other members of the community. Of course there's a twist. Each participating artist will contribute one of their own pieces. After drawing names from a hat, another artist from the group will then take your piece and expand on it. Creative control is out of your hands and the torch has been passed on. You ask "..but, but will they respect the work I've done?" The answer is, "who knows". Maybe you have an old painting you wanted to bring new life to. Maybe you have a new piece you want completed by another set of hands. You're the artist! Just make sure the the piece you bring to the table is in fact your piece.

SALES: All sales will be split evenly between the two artists and the gallery will get their cut. Prices for each piece will be determined by the two artists and agreed on by the gallery. I want to keep the price of each piece under $250 (recession-friendly), so please consider small or medium sized pieces.

DETAILS: Artists will be required to attend one meeting at Twilight (TBD). Names will be drawn and artwork will be exchanged. Work will be due to Twilight by Saturday AUGUST 8th.

Equinox opening a burning success!!

Last night @ Twilight in the Junction we hosted hosted Georgetown's Equinox Studios. The party was rip roarin' and culminated with the burning of the collected "heart heaviness" in the huge copper heart sculpture by Lisa Geertson of Firelight Forge.

The artists work in pastels, encaustic, metal sculpture and hand crafted wood and metal furniture.

Show runs through June 5th. Check it!

About the show:
Fading… Seattle

A documentation of vintage advertising murals and three dimensional signs throughout Seattle.

I began this project many years ago starting with the Elephant Car Wash. At that time I knew I found a project that was very special to me. I continued working on this project throughout the years carrying around a hand full of film and a fleet of Holga cameras. I have traveled through many of Seattle’s neighborhoods from the South-end to the North-end, searching for the hidden, the lost. Signs that are still being used and others that haven’t said a thing for many years... I feel drawn to photographing them.

The intent of this project is to document and preserve a part of Seattle’s advertising history as well as to celebrate this art form.

Karl Addison has been exploring the idea of over-population, saturation, and the dynamics between individual identity versus the selfhood gained and lost, when one becomes part of a union. The mustachio boxes, each having individual personalities, that when view together in this overpopulation become something all together different. Twilight Artist Collective needs some extra hands!

We are looking for some good people to help us with some or all of the following:
~Manning our Pike Place Gallery 2-3 days per week from 10-6
~Attending and assisting with our second Thursday openings, which take place during the second Thursday of each month from 6-9PM in West Seattle.
~Participate in quarterly brain hurricanes where we get together with like-minded galleries (bherd, suite100, La Familia) to strategize.
~We would also be willing to give web management, marketing, funding and outreach experience to interested candidates.

An ideal Twilight intern has; a true passion for the funky, urban eclectic art scene here in Seattle, is self-motivated, articulate, charismatic and most importantly, fun. This is not a paid internship.

Saturday October 11th during the Georgetown Art Attack from 6 to 9. W. Scott Trimble, Mary Enslow, and Adrien Van Dooren invite you the the Stables for a one night only sound experiment. Come and participate and or watch.
This little trio met in art school at the UW CMA. There they spent their days and nights eating hot dogs and ramen, talking, rubbing each-others backs, stroking each-others egos, drinking whiskey, doing hand stands, braiding each-others hair, banging on things, and making sweet ass art. Come see them re-united in an experiment that involves, black lights, white suits, 3 jukeboxes, several instruments, dozens of speakers, elysian brew, tape, butcher paper and alien inspiration.
